Grant Proposal

For my senior capstone project, I wanted to do something in the computer programming field. I always wanted to make video games as a hobby but up to this point, I've never made a game so I decided this would be a great opportunity to give it a try. I already have programming knowledge from self-teaching and the many computer classes I've been involved in so I'm definitely capable.

After brainstorming what type of game I wanted to make I've settled on a 2d side-scrolling adventure game. This game will include a minimum of 30 minutes of gameplay, a story, unique enemies, puzzles, and multiple endings. The gameplay and the overall experience should be enjoyable from start to end so this game will also utilize scripted events. These are events that are coded into the game and trigger under certain circumstances to make the experience more interesting or add depth to the story.

This project will be put together in the unity engine which is a great platform for new game developers. I will be using c# for programming scripts and working in Visual Studio's IDE. Sprite animations will be done in Asesprite and Krita, two different art programs, and the game's soundtrack will be done in FL Studio. All of the listed software is either freemium or already owned by me so I don't predict I will have to spend any money on this project.

To get this done in a timely manner I have a schedule. This schedule may change but I hope for a skeleton of the game to be done by December 2020 So that I have plenty of time to make changes and tweak as necessary. For the months of May and June, I will be working on the player character's various movement scripts and basic game mechanics along with developing the story for the game. Then for July through October, I 'll work on level design and enemy concepts/placement and I will begin scripting for the enemies, I also can start implementing placeholder animations for the player character and other NPCs. UI changes can be done in December along with adding story elements as well as tweaking different aspects of the game. If this schedule doesn't provide me with enough time I'll adjust accordingly. This will be a fun learning experience and I hope for a fun game to come of it.
